FL Round 2 Preview & Betting Tips
West Coast vs GWS
Sunday 6:20pm AEDT, March 26th, Optus Stadium
It’s been another exciting round in the AFL and we aren’t done yet. Sunday will see three games play out and the last of them will be in Perth with the West Coast Eagles taking on the GWS Giants. It’s potentially going to be a wet and windy day in Western Australia, but I’m sure it’ll still be an entertaining watch and a worthy way to finish the roller coaster that has been Round 2.
West Coast will be looking for their first win of the season this Sunday after failing against North Melbourne last weekend. The Eagles found themselves down by nearly six goals at stages during the third quarter, but were able to show some fight that we didn’t see from them in 2022 to get back into the contest. Ultimately it was all in vain as they went down by five points in an 82-87 thriller.
The Eagles loss against last season’s wooden spooners doesn’t look as bad now that the Kangaroos went on to defeat the Dockers in Round 2, and they’ll certainly take some positives from their second half effort that put themselves in with a chance of victory. Reuben Ginbey was one of the shining lights with 15 disposals and a game-high 12 tackles, and the likes of Luke Shuey, Dom Sheed, and Tim Kelly all performed well.
GWS were lucky to still be in the game at the main break against Adelaide last weekend due to the Crows inaccuracy in front of goal. The Crows kicked 8.12 in the first half and missed a number of sitters, which meant they only went into half time down 28 points when it could’ve easily been 50+. Eventually, the Giants would gather momentum in the second half and grind out a gutsy 106-90 win in Adam Kingsley’s first game in charge as coach.
The conditions in their Round 1 game were some of the toughest you’ll ever see in the AFL. Temperatures were in the high 30’s and that resulted in a number of players cramping and looking physically exhausted. Tom Green led the way for the winners with 37 disposals and a goal, while Stephen Coniglio (32 disposals), Toby Greene (four goals), and Finn Callaghan (25 disposals) were all important.
It'll be interesting to see how the Giants can back up their performance this weekend after playing in such harsh conditions in Round 1. We already saw the Crows run out of gas in the fourth quarter of their game against the Tigers, and I believe we’ll likely see something similar from the Giants on Sunday. With that in mind, coupled with the injury to Josh Kelly, I give the slight edge to the Eagles in this one.

Oscar Allen 2+ Goals – The ‘medium-sized O’ is the focal point down forward for the Eagles this season and is certainly capable of dominating that part of the ground. He should get plenty of looks today and I expect multiple goals from him.
Tom Green 30+ Disposals – Green was expected to have another breakout year and he franked those expectations with a stellar Round 1 performance with 37 disposals. Expecting another big game from him.
Stephen Coniglio 25+ Disposals – Coniglio was the catalyst for the Giants second half dominance against the Crows and will be crucial to their chances on Sunday. He’ll be around the ball enough to get 25+ touches.
