It’s been a dire season for West Coast, and last week’s heavy defeat at the hands of Hawthorn was one of the darkest hours in their history.
Heading into Round 11, the Eagles have the chance to bounce back against Essendon, who are fresh off a thrilling one-point win in this year’s edition of ‘Dreamtime at the G’.

AFL Round 11 Preview & Betting Tips
West Coast vs Essendon
Saturday 7:40pm AEST, May 27th, Optus Stadium
West Coast have officially hit rock bottom after falling to fellow cellar dwellers Hawthorn by a whopping 116 points last week. The Eagles were completely embarrassed by the Hawks, who resigned them to bottom spot on the ladder. Last week’s result made it two 100-point losses in the space of four weeks for West Coast, and it doesn’t look like there is much left to salvage for the Eagles in season 2023. Making matters worse, West Coast’s only consistent goal threat, Oscar Allen is in doubt for this match after copping a knee knock last week. With that being said, some experienced names should return this week with Elliot Yeo and Shannon Hurn both ready to face a fitness test before Saturday.
Essendon were also struggling for wins until last week, when they resurrected their season with a stirring win over the Tigers. Captain Zach Merrett went absolutely bonkers in the absence of midfielders Parish, Shiel and Setterfield, tallying 39 disposals in a complete performance. Defenders Jordan Ridley and Mason Redman were also at their best in the win over the Tigers, bouncing back from indifferent recent form to guide the Bombers home. Back on the winners list, Essendon now sit at 5-5 with a real shot at finals, and Shiel should return this week to help them build some momentum. With further reinforcements to come later in the year, Dons fans should continue to hold hope that their side can figure in the September action this season.
The Bombers are almost unbackable favourites for this game, due to West Coast’s horrendous recent form more than anything. While the Eagles appear unlikely to surprise people in this one, they actually have decent history against the Bombers, with two wins and a close loss in the last three encounters between the teams. Despite that stat, West Coast simply don’t have the scoring power to win games at the moment, so I have no doubt that they will lose this game. However, it could be closer than the punters expect, especially given Essendon’s run of losses before last weekend.

Tim Kelly 25+ Disposals – Kelly is one of the few Eagles who can hold their head high, having had an excellent season to date. The West Coast onballer has hit 25+ disposals in every home game this season, and he should do so again against an understrength Bombers midfield.
Essendon 1-39 – Yes, the Eagles have been battered in recent weeks, but the Bombers have hardly been outstanding either. Essendon will almost certainly win, but I can see this one coming in at under 40 points.
Sam Weideman 2+ Goals – Weideman has enjoyed his new lease on life at the Bombers, slotting into a key forward role. The ex-Dee has kicked 2+ goals in four of his last five games, and the Eagles have become notorious for conceding goals to talls.
