AFL Round 11 Preview & Betting Tips
Gold Coast vs Western Bulldogs
Saturday 7:25pm AEST, May 27th, TIO Stadium
The better of the two Saturday night games in Round 11 is likely to be the clash between Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs.
The Suns are listed as the home team for this fixture, but they’ll have no advantage with this being played on the neutral territory at TIO Stadium in Darwin.
However, going up to Darwin and out of Queensland might be a positive for the Suns who are coming off a big loss against the Lions in the QClash.
They were able to stay with the more experienced and talented Lions for the first three quarters of that clash, but when push came to shove in the final term they were severely outclassed and ended up going down by 43 points.
The Suns now head into Round 11 with four wins and six losses to their name, which is about where everyone expected them to be. For the most part, they’ve both won and lost the games you’d expect, but haven’t really shown any great improvement from a season ago.
Speaking of improvement, haven’t the Bulldogs showed a bit not only compared to last season, but compared to their first two games of 2023?
The Bulldogs began the season 0-2 and both losses were dismal to say the least. But they’ve rebounded since to win seven of their last eight and enter this fixture on a five-match winning run.
Yes, some of the Dogs wins have come against the lesser sides in the competition, but their win last weekend came against a Crows outfit that many have knocking on the door of the eight this season, and they made them look second rate.
Tim English has become arguably the best ruck in the competition, or at least in the top three. Marcus Bontempelli is in Brownlow Medal form. And Tom Liberatore is having a career-year.
however, the most pleasing part of this Bulldogs resurgence has been the way their back six or seven have been able to stand up. Their defence was clearly their weakest link last season, yet they come into Round 11 with the third-best ranked defence in 2023.
Form and confidence make the Bulldogs the deserved favourites in this matchup with the Suns. They’re playing like a top four side at the moment and should be covering the small spread in this one as a result.

Ben Ainsworth 1+ Goals – Seems to love this matchup against the Bulldogs. Has kicked three goals in each of his last two outings against them. We’re just asking for one this time.
Oskar Baker 15+ Disposals – Has filled a role on the wing nicely this season and is in solid form. Has five consecutive games of 15+ disposals under his belt.
Cody Weightman 2+ Goals – The Suns tall backs are genuinely solid, so I expect the Bulldogs smalls to get to work here. Weightman is due for a couple of sausage rolls and his price appears as value.
