2020 Royal Ascot Racing Tips: Day 5 Preview
Best Bet: Race 3 - (12) QAADER
Next Best Bet: Race 8 - (9) WHO DARES WINS
Race 1 Silver Wokingham Handicap (Market)
An extra race today as the final day of Royal Ascot kicks off with the first of the Wokingham races (this one the consolation race). Ed Walker’s (1) Swindler has a good record at Ascot, is 2 from 2 at the course. Has never raced on softish conditions though. If handling the ground may go well. Tim Easterby trained (3) Count D’Orsay is a very consistent performer (last race runs – 31232). Mostly races over 5f and last time he raced over the distance of this race (6f) back in March 2019 he come 7th at Dundalk (AW). (10) APLOMB has done well over this distance in the past and handles the soft conditions. He’s the pick.
Race 2 Queen Mary Stakes (Fillies' Group 2) (Market)
As I have mentioned previously a Wesley Ward runner must be respected, he runs 2 in this with the stand out runner being (1) Campanelle who won on debut at the end of May at Gulfstream Park with (12) Royal Approval in 2nd (that one runs in this too). The Aidan O’Brien runner (8) MORE BEAUTIFUL looks very interesting. A winner on debut by 3 ½ lengths at Naas. Has strong claims and is the pick. A winner by 5 lengths on debut at Lingfield (AW) (14) Sands Of Time also deserves a mention. Buick rides for Mark Johnston. I am also going each way on (4) DICKIEDOODA who won on debut at the Curragh. With progress may well run a big one.
Value: (4) Dickiedooda $17
Race 3 Coventry Stakes (Group 2) (Market)
A few to mention in this including (4) Creative Force and (8) Lauded. I am going to concentrate on the 2 who I think are both serious contenders for the win. Starting with the Aidan O’Brien trained (1) Admiral Nelson who won on debut at the Curragh. For a trainer with a good record in this race he has serious claims. (12) QAADER for Mark Johnston who won on debut at Newbury impressively by 4 lengths. Like Admiral Nelson he has serious claims especially with Jim Crowley onboard who has had a great week.
Race 4 Coronation Stakes (Fillies' Group 1) (Market)
(1) Alpine Star was a Group 2 winner at the Curragh on her last start. (5) Run Wild won the Listed Pretty Polly (1m 2f) over a week ago at Newmarket. Runs over the mile today. No issues. I am going to take a chance with the US filly (6) SHARING trained by Graham Motion. Winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita Park last year. Has since won at Churchill Downs in May. Never run on soft conditions but worth a go and if she handles it will certainly go well as the US horses have been doing this week.
Race 5 St James's Palace Stakes (Group 1) (Market)
A thrilling race ahead. Starting with (7) Wichita who was 2nd beaten a neck in the Group 1 2000 Guineas with Pinatubo in 3rd. Wichita was 3rd in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes last year (Pinatubo the winner of the race that day). Bit of a grudge match today with these 2. (3) PINATUBO as a 2yo was sensational, win after win. I am taking him to get back to winning ways after his 3rd in the 2000 Guineas on his last start. (2) Palace Pier also another that needs a mention for John Gosden.
Race 6 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) (Market)
(5) Sceptical is the highest-rated sprinter in Ireland. 3 wins this year with the most recent coming in a Listed race at Naas. Not run on softish conditions. (10) ONE MASTER has won the Group 1 Prix de la Foret over in France twice (2018 & 2019). Soft conditions suit and he is the pick.
Race 7 Wokingham Stakes (Handicap) (Class 2) (Market)
(20) HIGHLAND DRESS really sticks out for me in the Wokingham. Has won on his last start and also the race before. Going for the hat trick and I think he can get it. Dangers include (9) Bielsa and (8) Summerghand.
Race 8 Queen Alexandra Stakes (Market)
This can go to (9) WHO DARES WINS who has plenty of stamina for a race like this (previous Northumberland Plate winner – 2m ½ f) has more form over 2m+ also. His trainer Alan King has had 2 winners so far this week. His biggest danger is likely to be (8) The Grand Visir.
