Roger Federer will attempt to win a record 8th Wimbledon title when he faces Croatian Marin Cilic in the final of the 2017 tournament on Sunday night. The Swiss master has not dropped a set enroute to the final and will be hoping to claim his second Grand Slam of the year after winninght the Australian Open back in Janurary.
His opponent, Marin Cilic, can cap off an extremely consistent 2017 with a win here after reaching the quarters at the French Open and winning his 17th ATP title in Istanbul in May. The Croatian will be facing an uphill battle, however, as he takes on Roger Federer who at 35 years of age is arguably in career best form.
Many had written off Federer when his body started giving him troubles from the late stages of 2013 to 2015 and saw him absent from two of the four Grand Slams last year. However, the World No.5 has bounced back in a massive way, reclaiming the form of yesteryear and making at least the semi final of his last four Grand Slams.
The reduced workload Federer has taken on through 2016-17 has worked wonders for him. He took the entire clay court season off this year for rest which has allowed him to make a deep run at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
It could be said that at 25 years of age, Marin Cilic won his first Grand Slam title, the 2014 US Open, a few years ahead of schedule. Now 28, Cilic is in the prime of his career and will be looking to capatilise with a statement win over Federer. His current ranking of 6th in the world is the highest he has ever climbed but breaking into that big five of Federer, Murray, Djokovic, Nadal and Warwinka with a win here will be testament to his good form.
The big Croatian will need to rely on a mean first serve if he is to have any chance against Federer, who currently holds a 6-1 record over Cilic. No one can deny Federer’s grass court form though, it seems he has so much more time than anyone else on the fastest of all of the surfaces, while the speed of the grass turns his pinpoint serve from a pretty good serve to arguably the best in the world.
Federer’s ability to drop the ball on a 50c piece on both forehand and backhand side combined with the reduced time his opponents get to react on grass court is the reason why he has a chance to win a record 8th Wimbledon tite on Sunday night. While Cilic has elevated his game in the last few years to probably be on par with the likes of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovvic, Federer is playing like a man possessed at the moment and we cant see him losing this one.
At odds of just $1.18, however, there’s absolutey no meat on the bone for a Federer win. Look to the correct set markets for some value, we think he should win either 3-0 or 3-1.
TIP: Roger Federer to win 3-0 - $2 at Sportsbet
Throughout his career, Federer has been a player who makes ridiculous runs in games and often beats some of the best players in the world 6-0 or 6-1 when on song. Even if Cilic is able to pinch a set in this match, a couple of dominant sets could still see the total games fall under 36.5
TIP: Total games UNDER 36.5 - $1.88 at Ladbrokes
