With the Formula 1 mid season break still in full effect, we turn our attention to the 2017 Moto GP season this weekend and to Spielberg for the 26th edition of the Austrian Grand Prix. We preview the big race and give our betting tips below.
It was a decent outing for us last weekend at the Czech Republic GP, tipping the winner Marc Marquez at a handy $2.85 and getting close with our Cal Crutchlow place bet. With the win, Marquez shot 14 points clear atop the standings with Maverick Vinales, Andrea Dovizioso, Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa all within striking distance.
The tour moves to the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg this weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix. It will be just the second time the newly redeveloped Red Bull Ring has hosted a Moto GP race since the Austrian GP was revived after a 19 year absence in 2016.
Ducati rider Andrea Iannone won last years edition ahead of teammate Andrea Dovizioso and Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo. It was the only race all year where both Ducati’s finished on the podium. With no real tight and technical corners to speak of and plenty of long straights, the power of the Ducati’s have a massive advantage on the Red Bull Ring.
Andrea Dovizioso is in great form this year and already has two race wins under his belt. A win here would put some real pressure on Marc Marquez at the top of the leaderboard and sitting atop the Ducati its hard to find a way he doesn’t get close here. The bookies are onto the fact as well, opening Dovizioso as favourite at $2.60.
Andrea Dovizioso to win
$2.88
Jorge Lorenzo is the interesting one for me here, without a win all season after moving to Ducati at the end of last year, he will be desperate to prove he can get it done on the Italian bike. This is arguably his best chance for the season and at $6 he represents some great value.
Jorge Lorenzo to win
$8.00
It’s all about Ducati here at Austria and we’ll be taking another rider from Ducati as our third option, albeit the Octo Pramac racing team. Danillo Petrucci has had a breakout year on the mid tier team bike with two podiums and a host of top ten finishes. He’ll be putting his hand up to join a top team next season and is a massive chance for a place here.
