2016 PGA: The Barclays
Where: Bethpage Black golf course, Long Island, New York
When: Thursday 25th August (9:00pm first tee)
Purse: $8,500,000
The FedEx Cup playoffs marks the business end of the season on the PGA Tour. It all begins this week on the east coast as Bethpage Black golf course hosts The Barclays. It’s been four years since Bethpage hosted The Barclays and fourteen years since Tiger Woods won the U.S Open here. Bethpage is a public golf course located on Long Island in New York.
At 7468 yards (par 71) and a slope rating of 152 (compared to Augusta National 137 slope rating) Bethpage Black is one of the toughest courses out there. Only eight players finished at 5 under par or better in the last Barclays tournament held here.
I’m excited to see a quality roster of golfers competing this week. Coming in as hot favourite (and rightly so) is Australia’s very own Jason Day. Day is world number one with three wins this season, nine top 10’s and over $7.5 million in earnings. However, he did struggle here in 2012. At $8.50 I prefer other players but we will have another look at Jason Day next week in Boston.
When all is said and done this week 100 players will advance to the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. Here are my selections for The Barclays.
Dustin Johnson
This is my guy. I am going to ignore his last start at the PGA Championship and just put that down as a tired effort at the end of a hectic schedule. Now DJ comes into the playoffs rested and hungry for that number one spot. He has had somewhat of a breakout season which includes two wins, a 2nd, two 3rds and twelve top 10’s (for $7.2 million in earnings). Johnson has also had success here with a T3rd in 2012.
Tip: Dustin Johnson to win outright - $10 at CrownBet
Brandt Snedeker
After his 5th place finish at the Canadian Open a month ago he was on my radar. Last week he looked like he was back to his old self with four rounds in the 60’s and a 3rd place finish at the Wyndham Championship. Snedeker finished second here in 2012. He knows how to get it around Bethpage and looks like value.
Tip: Brandt Snedeker to win outright - $34 at CrownBet
Luke Donald
This is a risky play considering Luke has missed 6 cuts this season. In saying that he looked like his former self last week with a 2nd place finish at Wyndham. He also has good results at Bethpage Black including a T10th in 2012.
Tip: Luke Donald to win outright - $81 at CrownBet
+ Donald to finish top 10 - $9 at CrownBet
Graham Delaet
I am expecting a bounce back from Delaet after missing the cut last week. He looked pretty good in Brazil and has course experience at Bethpage Black. He shot a final round 65 here in 2012 to finish in 5th place.
Tip: Graham Delaet to win outright - $201 at CrownBet
+ Delaet to finish top 20 - $11 at CrownBet
