The 2016 French Open Women’s final will be a blockbuster between tournament favourite Serena Williams and Spaniard hopeful Garbine Muguruza. Pre-tournament odds had Williams at $3.25 and Muguruza at $9.00. Now the final is here Williams has firmed into approximately $1.60 and you can get about $2.40 for Muguruza. These odds may come as quite a shock but I believe the reason is the history between these two. Specifically, the 2014 French Open where Muguruza knocked Williams out in just the second round (6-2, 6-2).
Williams was asked on Friday what she had learnt from that match and Williams responded with “It was an unbelievable lesson for me and it propelled me to many, many, many wins after that”. I believe Williams 100% when she says she learnt a lesson that day. Williams actually went on to win the next three majors after that.
It’s now two years later and Williams is sitting on 21 Grand Slams, just one shy from Steffi Graf and three behind Margaret Court. Williams and Muguruza played in the 2015 final at Wimbledon. The final result was a methodical 6-4, 6-4 victory to Williams. This is a much slower surface but I believe Williams seems far more patient than she was in 2014. Williams seems destined to sit on top in the hall of fame.
This match will be no walk in the park for Williams and at times it may even seem like its slipping away. However, at the end of the day Williams will have her 22nd Grand Slam and 4th French Open title.
