The 2016 French Open Women’s tournament will be just as captivating as the Men’s for one reason. Serena Williams! Serena is chasing more than just her fourth French Open title. With a win at Roland Garros, Serena would equal Steffi Graf’s total of 22 Grand Slam titles. Which would edge her ever so close to Margaret Court who holds 24 Grand Slam titles.
In the past Serena’s toughest French Open foe has been Maria Sharapova. Ever since Sharapova won her first French Open back in 2012, the pair have taken turns in holding up La Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy. If that trend was to continue it would be Sharapova’s year to hold the title. However, we all know that won’t be the case as Sharapova tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January and is still suspended.
According to Russian tennis federation president Shamil Tarpischev, Sharapova’s career is over. Only time will tell if this statement is accurate. In the meantime, the suspension has temporarily removed Serena’s hardest opponent on clay. This year’s other Women’s hopefuls include Simona Halep ($6.50), Victoria Azarenka ($8.00), Garbine Muguruza ($9.00) and Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber ($15.00). Most of these players have shared some sort of recent success. However, this is Serena’s tournament to lose.
The world number 1 and defending champion is peaking just in time for her 22nd Grand Slam. Serena dominated in Rome without dropping a set. Earlier in her career she wasn’t that dominant on the clay surface and after her maiden victory here in 2002 it took her eleven years to get her second win. Since 2013 she has looked very comfortable on Clay and with the withdrawal of Sharapova I believe Serena is good value at $3.25.
Tip: Serena Williams to win the 2016 French Open
