Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will clash on Sunday night in the finals of the 2015 US Open in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash.
This is the new chapter in a rivalry that has gone many places and tournaments. For all the enthusiasts and even the tournament organizers, this is a dream final. A final that has the world number 1 taking on the most popular player, and one of the all-time greats, is straight out of a script.
Federer looked in imperious touch throughout the tournament. He is yet to lose a set and his serve is also looking impregnable. He brushed aside his fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka in the semis 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. As the score line indicates, this was a masterclass from the maestro.
After months of tinkering, the Swiss legend is comfortable with his larger racket. He also appears fresh on the court, running like a teenager from end-to-end. And the crowd will also be behind him because he’s truly a fan favourite here.
Djokovic has had a wonderful year so far reaching all the Grand Slam finals and losing only the French Open. In the semis he dismantled defending champion Marin Cilic 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. It was only the Spanish left hander Feliciano Lopez who troubled him in the quarter-finals.
Though Djokovic was in control of that match, Lopez surprised him with his serve and volley. But, the top seed saves his best for the big games. The Serb is someone who relishes longer rallies and will rely on his returns to tame Federer’s serve.
This will be the 42nd meeting between these two great players with Federer leading 21-20. This year they split their four matches with the most recent match ending in a Federer win in the Cincinnati finals. The Swiss maestro looks to be more aggressive on the hard courts and could spring a surprise here.
The odds of $2.10 at Ladbrokes on Federer winning the trophy looks worth a risk especially with the great promotion at Ladbrokes where we'll get cash back if he wins the first set (see below). Whichever way it goes, this match will be a feast for all tennis lovers across the globe.
