2014 AFL: Round 1 Preview and Betting Tips

March 14th 2014, 1:11am, By: admin

AFL Betting Tips

The footy is back! Round 1 of the 2014 AFL Season kicks off this Friday, March 14th and we at Before You Bet couldn’t be more excited to bring you the first of our AFL betting previews.

We are just as eager as all our readers to have a punt on Round 1 of the AFL, but the fact of the matter is that form lines just aren’t there yet. We can easily assess games based on 2013 merit and form, of course taking into account trades and how teams are tracking, but putting your hard earned cash on the line might not be worth it before seeing the first couple of games of the season.

AFL Round 1 Betting Tips

The teams have only been named for the first four games, obviously, considering it is a split round. Frankly we suggest staying away from Collingwood V. Fremantle on Friday night.  We lean toward Fremantle to cover the -7.5 line, but definitely think we need to see more of both of these teams. The GWS V. Sydney game is too hard to pick with such a big line, though we do think Sydney will easily win by six plus goals. In the Richmond V. Gold Coast game we think the Tigers will easily cover the Suns, but we need to see more of the Suns before we are willing to have a punt on them.

The only game we think may be worth a bet is the Carlton V. Port Adelaide game and in fact, that’s only if you are willing to check out the Sportsbet money back special which we outline below. Basically we think you could bet on Carlton head-to-head at around $1.65 at Sportsbet and be happy to have the money-back special whereby a refund will be given if Carlton lead at any break, yet go on to lose the game. Check out the details of this AFL betting promotion and more below!

Before You Bet Round 1 tipping advice

Thousands of people who don’t like betting on the AFL still enter tipping competitions in the office, on the worksite or in their local pubs. We will be letting our readers know who we are tipping each week and keeping a running tally. This isn’t betting advice, just those teams that we think will win. Tipping is all about bragging rights and we are hoping to bag a few 9/9 before the season is over.

Considering the teams havent been announced for the entire Round 1, these arent gospel, but most tipping competitions will force you to pick all your games before Friday evening anyway, so here are our Round 1 tipping competition picks!

Fremantle (Vs. Pies)
Sydney (Vs. GWS)
Richmond (Vs. GCS)
Carlton (Vs. Pt. Adel)
Geelong (Vs. Adel)
North Melbourne (Vs. Dons)
Hawthorn (Vs. Lions)
Melbourne (Vs. Saints)
West Coast (Vs. Dogs)
