The Triple J Hottest 100 might not be on Australia Day this year, but it’s still generated just as much, if not more attention amongst the Aussie public, and the punters. All of the major betting companies around Australia have opened betting markets for the top song of the year, with American rapper Kendrick Lamar topping the list at all of them.
After increasing debates and changing perspective over what Australia Day meant to Australians and whether the Hottest 100 celebrations were appropriate for the sacred day, Triple J made the call to change the date of the countdown to this Saturday, the 27th of January, starting at noon AEDT.
There are 25 songs in the betting market at Sportsbet alone, with others available upon request. Kendrick Lamar leads the way with his song ‘HUMBLE’ followed by Sydney hopefuls Gang of Youths with their hit ‘The Deepest Sighs’ and New Zealand superstar Lorde with the hit ‘Green Light’.
There have been some massive upsets in the past few years countdowns, with Flume’s ‘Never Be Like You’ beating out Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ last year and the Rubens beating out Kendrick Lamar and Major Lazer the year before with their hit ‘Hoops’.
It brings into question the legitimacy of the $1.50 price tag slapped on Kendrick Lamar here, especially as he’s going up against a couple of home grown heroes in Gang of Youths and to an extent… Lorde.
With the ARIA love they raked in back in November, winning best group and best album for their hit record ‘Go Farther in Lightness’, we think they could be on the cards to cause an upset here with ‘The Deepest Sighs’. Back the value here!

And that’s not all the fun to be had this weekend! With JJJ vacating Australia Day, the slot has opened up for Triple M to swoop in. The Australian rock station will be hosting the first (and most likely only) ‘Ozzest 100’, to be counted down on the 26th of January!
