2024 AFL Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips
St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs
Thursday 7:30pm AEST, April 18th, Marvel Stadium
Somewhat of an unknown heading into the season, St Kilda remain just that through five rounds. They’ve traded losses with wins on a weekly basis and are yet to show their true identity.
However, there’s been plenty of positive signs with the relatively tough early draw they were dealt; they lost to both current undefeated teams in the Cats and the Giants by nine points combined, and also secured a win over the reigning premiers in the Magpies.
An unfortunate knee injury will rule out Max King this weekend, although it’s a lot better than first thought and he should return next weekend. Zak Jones will replace him which will mean Coach Lyon will be flicking some magnets around.
Elsewhere, alarm bells are starting to ring in the Bulldogs camp after their horrible loss to the Bombers last weekend in a match where they started as the firm favourites. That made it back-to-back losses after a somewhat promising 2-1 start to their campaign.
A couple of the key Bulldogs core in Bontempelli and English looked somewhat disinterested last weekend and fans will be hoping for much better signs on Thursday night. On top of that, young gun Ryley Sanders showed his frustration when subbed out which drew a large amount of scrutiny in the media.
In another blow for the Bulldogs, Tom Liberatore has been ruled out due to concussion protocols. Coming in are the likes of James Harmes and Riley Garcia, both of whom have been tearing it up in the VFL.
Match prediction: Both clubs enter this contest at 2-3 and will be desperate to even the ledger on Thursday night, and the bookies have priced this contest at near 50-50 with the Saints given the very slight edge.
Ross Lyon gave his counterpart in Luke Beveridge a bath in the coaching box in their only meeting in 2023, with the Saints winning the contest by 51 points (92-51). And while both teams have identical records at this stage, the Saints have definitely been the more consistent and impressive outfit. With that said, taking the Saints to get the job done in the round opener looks to be a great bet.

Jack Steele 25+ Disposals – Has had a phenomenal start to the year and looks right back to his best. He’s had 25+ disposals in five six games to date.
