AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Hawthorn
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, July 22nd, MCG
Meeting for the first and only time this season, Richmond and Hawthorn will do battle at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. This should be a fun way to get Super Saturday underway, with two attacking sides looking to pile on the score.
Since starting the season with just one win from their opening seven matches, Richmond have been ticking over the win column with regularity. They enter Round 19 having won five of their last six and seven of their last 10 matches.
The Tigers never had to get out of first gear against the Eagles last weekend when coming away with a 38-point win. Dustin Martin was solid again and has now put together a fantastic past month where he’s averaging over 28 disposals and nearly one goal a game, while Shai Bolton is also enjoying a stellar second half of the season.
Hawthorn got themselves back onto the winners list last weekend in superb fashion against a fellow rebuilding team in North Melbourne. They were the far better team from start to finish and showed that they’re at least a couple of steps ahead of the Kangaroos at this point in time.
The Hawks have shown great improvement since starting the season 1-8 and their fans will be excited about what they’re building with Sam Mitchell at the Helm. They come into this weekend having won four of their last eight games, including three of their past four in Melbourne.
While the Hawks are clearly trending in the right direction, I believe there’s been a bit of an overcorrection in the odds for this match. This is an absolute must-win for the Tigers if they’re to play finals in 2023, and I expect them to bring the heat from the outset as a result.
The Tigers piled on 117 and 128 points in their two matches against the Hawks last season, and I can see them having similar success this time around against a vulnerable Hawks defence that have conceded 100+ points on eight occasions this campaign.

Richmond to Win – With so much at stake, I think Richmond just win here.
James Sicily 25+ Disposals – Unlike last weekend, there will be a lot of ball in the Hawks D50 against the Tigers. Sicily will be around the footy all day and should rack them up.
Dustin Martin 2+ Goals – The champ is still playing most of his footy up forward while occasionally pinch-hitting in the midfield. He’ll get multiple looks at the big sticks; we just need him to take a couple of his chances.
