Welcome to our horse racing preview and betting tips for racing on Sunday, December 1st.
We round out the week of Australian racing by looking at today's meetings at Traralgon and Warrnambool. Luke Krahe has studied the form and highlighted his best bets for each track below!
Horse Racing Tips: Sunday, December 1st
Traralgon Race 7 (Market)
The Traralgon Cup is the feature of the day in Vic, (2) Prince Ziggy looks to have come back well this prep. He resumed at Geelong over 1500m and was only beaten just under 4 lengths by the talented Harbour Views. He then went on to win the Ballan Cup at Geelong before going to Donald for their big day a fortnight ago. He sat up on the speed second, loomed up to join the leader only to go down by the narrowest of margins in a three-way go. “Nifty” Noel Callow gets on, there should be a few looking for the top but I expect him getting out in trip to be rolling forward and looking for the lead. Fully fit now fourth-up, he will be very hard to run down if he does land on the bunny.
Warrnambool Race 2 (Market)
The Lindsey Smith trained debutant (9) Mr Cancun has been well supported in the early betting to win at his first trip to the races, he hasn’t been to the official trials but has had a jump-out here at the track. I was not at all impressed when I did the tapes, he jumped well and sat second and whilst he did close the gap slightly to the winner of the jump-out late, he was ridden right out whilst the leader was cruising. Happy to take him on for sure at the short quote. One I did like at a recent jump out is the resuming (12) St Joeys. He debuted at Swan Hill back in the early winter, he settled mid-field and was held-up early in the straight before finding the lien well, narrowly missing the placings. His latest jump-out at Tatura was encouraging, he jumped fairly but was eased to last, sat very wide on the track and entering the straight was a mile off the leaders. The jockey asked him for an effort over the last furlong and he really savaged the line. His debut was over 975m which clearly looked too short, drawn wide he will probably get back and run on hard over the 6 furlongs.
Warrnambool Race 8 (Market)
The feature of the day at the Bool is the Jericho Cup, a flat race over...4600m! (4) Da Deputy is the perfect horse for this sort of race, he just keeps running. Three back at Wagga he won by as far as he liked over 3800m, went to the Valley over 3000m and although never looked like winning, kept finding the line. Last start back at Wagga over the two miles, he led and controlled the race, increased the tempo down the back and won by more than 11 lengths with more than 4 lengths back to third. It was as easy a watch as you will ever see if you backed him and he didn’t look like slowing down. The jockey change doesn’t fill me with confidence but if he just rides him like the best, toughest stayer, he will be winning.
