Women’s Wimbledon Betting Tips
History
Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The men’s draw has been played on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Club in London since 1877, while the women first competed in 1884. The most successful woman in the tournament’s history is USA’s Martina Navratilova who went to the final 12 times for nine wins. The reigning champion is Germany’s Angelique Kerber. She defeated Serena Williams (7x Wimbledon champion) in the final 6-3, 6-3.
Seeded Players
Like all Grand Slam events there are 32 seeded players in both the men’s and the women’s section at Wimbledon. Unlike the other Grand Slams however, Wimbledon decide their seeds with a unique formula that is not solely based on ranking points accumulated over the past 12 months.
Below is a list of the top eight seeded women at this year’s Wimbledon.
(1) Ashleigh Barty
(2) Naomi Osaka
(3) Karolina Pliskova
(4) Kiki Bertens
(5) Angelique Kerber
(6) Petra Kvitova
(7) Simona Halep
(8) Elina Svitolina
Contenders
As always, it’s an open draw on the women’s side with so many genuine contenders in with a shot if they can find the right mix between top form and a quality draw. However, we’ve gone through a couple of the big names and given our verdict.
Ashleigh Barty ($6.50) – She’s obviously just proven herself at Grand Slam level by taking out the French Open last month. Barty’s also just become the first Australian woman to be ranked number one in the world since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1976. Winning on the dirt in Paris was impressive, now she gets the chance to back it up on her favourite surface. Huge chance.
Naomi Osaka ($17) – The young gun has been out of sorts of late and just surrendered the #1 ranking to Barty. However, she’s now back on a surface she’s more dominant on and can find top form if everything falls into place. Like her odds suggest, she’s not among the top hopes but is still a chance.
Karolina Pliskova ($7) – The big hitting Czech isn’t the biggest fan of clay and will be much more comfortable on the grass at Wimbledon. She’s a former #1 and reach the fourth round here last year and the semis of the Australian Open earlier this year. One of the leading hopes.
Angelique Kerber ($10) – Yet again, another former world number one. Kerber is a 3x Grand Slam champion and is the reigning champion at Wimbledon. She hasn’t been in the best of form this year but has proven us wrong before.
Serena Williams ($9) – It wouldn’t be a complete list of Wimbledon contenders if we didn’t mention Serena Williams. The 37-year-old’s fitness remains a question mark, but her ability to win Slams does not. 7x champ at Wimbledon and is among the favourites once again.
Prediction
Our own Ash Barty is the hot pick to win Wimbledon and is the name on everyone’s lips – and for good reason. She’s had a fantastic year to date and is playing full of confidence at the moment. The fact that she won on clay only gives us more faith that she can get it done on the grass. She has the game that suits the lawns perfectly and will likely make a deep run this year. Ash wasn’t given the easiest of draws, highlighted by the potential third round match-up with Garbine Muguruza. However, she’s the favourite for a reason and we aren’t prepared to pick against her at Wimbledon.
