2024 AFL Round 22 Preview & Betting Tips
Sydney vs Collingwood
Friday 7:40pm AEST, August 9th, SCG
What has happened to Sydney? They were absolutely flying at Round 15 with only one loss against their name and sat three games clear at the top of the ladder. Fast Forward to the end of Round 21 and they’re only two points clear at the top, thanks to five losses from their past six.
Last weekend’s 112-point loss against the Power broke a ton of records that have been well-documented throughout the week. However, the question is can they bounce back from such a demoralising performance?
Coach John Longmire has swung the axe and called for four unforced changes to the team. Thankfully, they’ll regain Dane Rampe in defence as well as Joel Amartey up forward.
Collingwood’s season has been an interesting one. Alarm bells were ringing early doors when they lost their first three games which had everyone screaming “premiership hangover”. However, they responded with an eight-game unbeaten run, only to lose five of their next seven.
On paper, the Pies have seemingly bounced back once more with wins in their last two, although the first was against the likely spooners in the Tigers, while the last was in Pendles 400th which they simply had to get up for.
In devastating news for the Pies, Jordan De Goey suffered a season-ending hamstring injury last weekend. He’ll be replaced by Joe Richards which isn’t exactly a like for like.
Match Prediction: As we’ve touched on in recent weeks, arguably the key statistic in the AFL in the modern day is your score off turnover differential. The Swans rank #3 in this metric for the season but are #17 over their past five games. This should have the emergency lights flashing.
However, I’m extremely keen to have a ‘feel’ tip here, so follow warily. The Swans simply must bounce back after last week, whereas I feel the Magpies played their ‘grand final’ last weekend in Pendles 400th. I think this will be one way traffic in favour of the Swans.

Sydney to Win – For the reasons mentioned above.
Joel Amartey 2+ Goals – Amartey returns after a short layoff and will get a favourable matchup against the undersized Pies. I like him for a couple of goals here.
Will Hayward 2+ Goals – If the Swans get on top like a suspect they will, then Hayward should get plenty of looks at goal playing deep forward.
SGM Odds: $3.80 at BoomBet
