AFL Round 6 Preview & Betting Tips
Carlton vs Greater Western Sydney
Marvel Stadium, Saturday 20th April, 4.35pm (AEST)
After a dominant first three quarters, the Giants almost gave the game away against the Saints last week, barely managing to hold on for a one point win to star undefeated on the season so far. Lachie Whitfield was impressive in the win, racking up 34 touches while Jesse Hogan continued his strong start to the season with another two goals.
The win had its drawbacks, though, as star defender Sam Taylor and former captain Stephen Coniglio went down with nasty injuries. Both will be on the sidelines this week, as Callan Ward and Leek Aleer both make their season debuts.
The Blues were undefeated and heavily favoured heading into their home game against the Crows in Round 5. After an up and down game that consisted of 14 lead changes, the Blues squandered a 15 point final quarter lead to lose their first game of the season by two points.
The loss also came with injury setbacks for the Blues, as defenders Adam Saad and Mitch McGovern both failed to run out the game and will be out this Saturday. Coming into the side will be youngster Lachlan Cowan as well as key defender Lewis Young.
Match Prediction
Carlton have opened as favourites at home here, which is interesting given they lost under the Marvel roof last week and their opponents have looked the form side in the competition through the early parts of the season so far.
I do think, however, that the GWS injuries will impact them much more than Carlton’s will. The Blues are arguably the last team you want to face without your No.1 key defender in Sam Taylor, so covering both Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow could be an issue here.
The Giants are the No.1 rated offence in the league while the Blues sit in the top six in that category. With both teams missing key defenders, I think this will be a high scoring game under the roof. Back the overs here.

Charlie Curnow 3+ Goals – The reigning Coleman Medallist has been in great form to start the seaason, kicking 17 goals through his opening five games. He has failed to kick 3+ goals on just one occassion so far and should thrive on Sam Taylor being absent.
Tom Green 25+ Disposals – The most prolific ball winner in the compeition at the moment, Green has had a monster start to the year, racking up 29.6 touches per game through his opening five. Had a bit of a down week against the Saints with 'just' 24 touches last week so will be keen to bounce back.
Patrick Cripps 25+ Disposals – Has only been over the 25 disposal mark in two of his five games this year but it's what he did against the Giants last season that has us looking hard at Cripps this week. The Brownlow Medallist had his best game of the season against GWS last season with 42 touches and 13 clearances in a 10 point win.
