PGA Tour Sony Open Betting Tips
Waialae Country Club, Thursday 11th - Sunday 14th January
The 2024 PGA tour season got underway in Hawaii last week with the annual Sentry Tournament of Champions, celebrating the winners and the top finishers on last years FedEx Cup Standings. This week marks the first regular field event of the year, so we’ll see a lot of names making their season debut.
The Field
Probably the headline of the field notes leading into this week will be the return of Will Zalatoris. The current World No.43 did compete at the Hero World Challenge a few weeks ago this will be his first official, full field PGA Tour event since all the way back in March of 2023.
Other big names who will be teeing it up this week include Ludvig Abery, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, Sahith Theegala and the winner of The Sentry last week, Chris Kirk.
Previous winners of the Sony Open who will be looking to add another trophy to the case this week include Kim Si-woo, Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Kuchar, Patton Kizzire and Russell Henley.
The Course
The championship course at Waialae Country Club was designed by Seth Raynor and opened all the way back in 1927. It plays as a 7,044, Par 70 which doesn’t offer golfers a great challenge in length off the tee, in fact, it’s winning score which is usually in the high teens or low 20s under par suggests that it is one of the easier courses on tour.
The one factor that can increase the difficulty of the course is the wind conditions. As you’d expect in Hawaii, the course is located right on the ocean, which can wreak havoc with players who are unaccustomed to links courses.
Betting Tips
Brian Harman ($21/Top 20 $2.25)
The 2023 Open Champion is top of our list heading into the Sony Open. He got his season off to a solid start with a T5 finish at The Sentry last week and is one of the few players in the field that has made Waialae an annual stop over recent history. He has played The Sony Open for the last 10 straight years, missing the cut just one time and making the Top 25 on four different occasions.
Ryan Palmer ($141/Top 40 $2.80)
For a bit of value this week, I like the look of Ryan Palmer. Will be making his first start since the RSM Classic back in November but was on a decent run of form around that time, racking up a T5 finish at the World Wide Technologies followed by a T8 at the Bermuda Championship. Has played nine of the last 10 events at Waialae, missing only one cut and making the top 20 on five occasions.
