2022-23 NBL Futures Betting Tips
NBL Championship
The league continues to get stronger with every passing year and that’s no different in 2022-23. The depth in talent right now is the best it’s ever been and that’s one of the reasons why you can make a legitimate case for up to seven teams to win the championship this season. All but the Taipans ($51), Breakers ($23), and JackJumpers ($23) are currently at a single-figure quote to win the chip.
Depending on which agency you browse, you’ll see that the Kings and the Bullets are the two main favourites to win it all this season. The Kings are obviously the defending champions, but they’ve lost all three of their imports from last season and the players they’ve signed to fill the void just simply aren’t as talented. Meanwhile, the Bullets’ short odds are on the back of some massive signings in Aron Baynes and Tyler Johnson, both of whom have the potential to be top 10 players in the league if they stay healthy. However, they’re certainly short enough in the market for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2018-19 season.
So, if the two main fancies aren’t my pick to win it all, who is?
I’m prepared to go a bit left field here and take the Adelaide 36ers as my first choice. The Bullets garnered a lot of attention for their big-name signings, but the best off-season moves were actually made by the 36ers in my opinion. Signing both Robert Franks and Antonius Cleveland is massive, and it’ll give them a lot of versality on offence, but particularly on defence with their length and switchability. Mitch McCarron is the perfect point guard to get their new signings good looks consistently, while veteran Daniel Johnson and youngster Kai Sotto are the cherries on top. The 36ers are going to be an exciting team to watch this season and I’m keen to be on them at good odds.

We’ve looked at the contenders for the upcoming season, now let’s talk about the pretenders. One team that I believe will drop off in a big way after a couple of seasons in contention is the Illawarra Hawks. They’ve decided to shake things up completely, moving on from GOAT coach in Brian Goorjian, as well as star import duo Antonius Cleveland and Xavier Rathan-Mayes. Tyler Harvey and Sam Froling will now be leaned upon heavily, but both men struggled for consistency last campaign and that will only become harder with less star power around them this season. The Hawks could certainly prove me wrong and put together a decent campaign, but I just think they’ve had too many moving parts and the quality they’ve brought in isn’t as good as what’s gone out the door. Happy to have a small play on the Hawks here.
