It’s the Australian reality TV show that has taken Australia by storm. It doesn’t involve cooking your mum’s best recipe, singing your favourite song or eating bugs in the jungle. It’s the show where you get married to a complete stranger and Australia gets their kicks out of watching it all tragically fall apart.
Married at First Sight is into its sixth season in Australia (with many international series now blossoming around the world) and continues to be a television ratings winner. The country just loves to scrutinize the group of misfits that have been thrown together into marital bliss, perhaps giving people at home the reassurance that their own reality is not so bad after all.
This season is only a few weeks in and already the cracks are starting to form. We’ve had the runaway groom, the vixen craving another woman’s man and even a 29-year old virgin partnered with a sexually-adventurous former lesbian. If that’s not entertainment, I don’t know what is!
To add even more spice to your viewing pleasure, you can even bet on MAFS at many of the leading Australian sports betting sites. Betting on reality TV can actually be a lot of fun, and although it’s a novelty market, there are some astute punters who are able to make some good profit from these markets.
One of the MAFS betting markets is the number of couples to successfully stay together for the duration of the televised series. The season started with ten couples, and there are always casualties along the way, with the “3-5 couples” option the warm favourite at $1.40 at Sportsbet.
Just “1-2 couples” surviving is the pessimistic next favourite at $2.62 at BetEasy, while you’ll get some better odds if you have a bit more faith in these love birds! There will probably be at least a couple of casualties, so you can get “6-8 couples” at juicy odds of $41 at BetEasy, but you have no faith at all in reality TV love then you can get $31 at Sportsbet for no couples to make it through the “experiment”.
With three couples seemingly certain to break their bond at the next commitment ceremony on Sunday night, it would seem we’re on track to see some carnage, but as we post this article on Valentine’s Day, shouldn’t we put some more faith in love? I mean, surely marrying a stranger at first sight isn’t all that bad, is it? Let’s back at least 6-8 couples to milk their entire 15 minutes of fame and roll around in a bed of roses when our $41 winner lands!
