2024 AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Gold Coast vs North Melbourne
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, May 11th, TIO Stadium
Whilst presenting as an outside hope this weekend, the Roos do surprisingly have reason to believe, after their last encounter provided a fruitful return on investment, with Nick Larkey booting 9-goals in a memorable win.
A lot has changed since then with only the core group sticking fat for North Melbourne, namely Jy Simpkin, Harry Sheezel, Tom Powell, Paul Curtis, Cam Zurhaar, Tristian Xerri and the aforementioned Larkey.
The welcomed change of a list turnover was initiated along with the arrival of Alistair Clarkson, who put an emphasis on the future from day dot, by targeting the draft rather heavily with the long run approach in mind.
For Gold Coast, an even newer changing of the guard saw Damien Hardwick assume the role of head coach in the off-season just past, taking the reins of a side mixed with an even blend of both youth and experience across the board.
All eyes will be on the midfield battle as the Roos will be fronted with one almighty challenge, going toe to toe with the likes of Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson and Touk Miller – all seasoned professionals at the peak of their powers.
The worry lies with the depth department, once Luke Davies-Uniacke needs a breather the concerns rise from a North Melbourne point of view with George Wardlaw left to fend for himself along with a learning Harry Sheezel in that part of the ground.
Clarkson, whilst not having many levers to pull, may have to shuffle the magnet of Colby McKercher, after spending the relative luxury of sitting on a half back flank in recent weeks.
Gold Coast should justify their short quote being on the right side of the ledger when the final siren sounds, but in terms of finding value I’d direct your attention to the big win little win markets, specifically forty plus.

Matt Rowell 20+ disposals – Is reasonably short but seems a great anchor to kickstart the multi. Has been in scintillating form and any attention he cops will be handled with disdain, looks a sure bet.
Sam Flanders 25+ disposals – Continues to impress roaming off the half back in a role where he has flourished since his magnet was shifted, rejuvenating his career in a way that has now welcomed in performing on a consistent basis.
Ben Ainsworth 1+ goal – North, as we know, have trouble defending full stop, but after putting the forward type under the microscope it reveals mid-sized targets often prove their greatest challenge which is the category Ainsworth falls into.
Paul Curtis 1+ goal – Has been a reliable inclusion in the games written with him as an anytime goal-scorer. Regularly hits the scoreboard as a pocket rocket that always seems to bob up in the right spot at the right time.
Colby Mckercher 20+ disposals – Since filling the shoes of Sheezel down back he has seen a heap of the sherrin. Always wary of a position change but the confidence boosting fortnight will be enough to see him cover the line regardless.
