2024 AFL Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips
Fremantle vs Carlton
Saturday 4:20pm AEDT, April 6th, Adelaide Oval
After a disappointing 2023 campaign where they finished 14th on the ladder, Fremantle have hit the ground running this season with three wins from as many games. They began the year with a strong home win against the Lions before accounting for the Kangaroos on the road in Round 2, and most recently took down the Crows in a cagey Round 3 matchup in Perth.
The Dockers have seemingly found the perfect mix between attack and defensive early in the season after making some tweaks to their gameplan. Their defence, led by skipper Alex Pearce, was absolutely phenomenal last week against the Crows as they gave up only 34 points. Meanwhile, they’ve looked potent going forward and will have even more options in the coming weeks with Sean Darcy set to return in Round 5, allowing Luke Jackson to spend more time forward.
Carlton have also begun 2024 in fine form with wins in all three of their outings to date. It all started in Opening Round when they overcame a 47-point deficit against the Lions to come away one-point winners. They backed that up with a clutch five-point win against the Tigers, while last time out they easily dispatched the Kangaroos by 56 points.
All-Australian defender Jacob Weitering made a successful return from injury last weekend and finished the game with seven intercept possessions. Down the other end, Harry McKay continued his barnstorming 2024 display with five goals to take his season tally to 11, and his partner in crime, Charlie Curnow kicked four and is also now in double-digits (10).
Match prediction: There’s a stench of game of the round surrounding this fixture, with both sides looking to remain unblemished. The Blues have had the upper hand in this matchup in recent times, including relatively easy wins in each of their last two meetings.
However, the Dockers have arguably been the most impressive team in the competition in 2024 and have players in career-best form all over the ground. With that said, I’m surprised to see them priced as the clear underdogs in a seemingly 50/50 matchup on the neutral surface at Adelaide Oval. I’m happy to take the juicy odds here and back the Dockers in to get the job done.

Michael Walters 1+ Goals – Looks to be in ripping touch despite being well into his 30s. Kicked a couple of goals last weekend and should be hitting the scoreboard again here.
Luke Ryan 25+ Disposals – Has a monopoly on the kick-ins for the Dockers and is their distributor out of defence. He’ll be racking them up like usual.
Hayden Young 25+ Disposals – Took a couple of weeks to find his feet in the midfield but was superb against the Crows last weekend. He should get to at least 25 disposals.
