AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
Brisbane vs Richmond
Thursday 7:20pm AEST, June 29th, Gabba
Brisbane and Richmond have faced each other in some highly important matches in recent years, and their upcoming clash on Thursday night is another one with huge implications.
Brisbane enter the round sitting pretty in third spot on the ladder with a 10-4 record. They’re currently riding a two-game win streak after proving too good for both the Swans and the Saints over the past fortnight.
However, the Lions haven’t been without their struggles through the first half of the season. They may have won on the road against the Saints last weekend, but their away form as a whole in 2023 has left a lot to be desired and remains one of the big question marks as they seemingly head towards another finals campaign.
Fortunately, they’ll be on their home deck for their Round 16 clash with Richmond, who are clearly a team on the rise.
The Tigers are humming and I feel their form is seriously underrated considering they’re 5-2 in their last seven and their two losses were by a combined 11 points. You can make a fair case that the only teams in better form coming into this weekend are the top two sides on the ladder being Collingwood and Port Adelaide.
The Tigers have now played four matches under the guidance of caretaker coach Andrew McQualter and have only suffered one loss, which was in Round 11 against a Power side that’s currently on an 11 match winning streak.
One of the noticeable improvements for the Tigers with McQualter in charge has been their ability to come out of the blocks firing. They’ve won the first quarter in each of their last three matches, but won only 3/10 this season when Damian Hardwick was at the helm.
Getting off to another fast start against the Lions on Thursday night is pivotal to the Tigers chances. If they can get to quarter time in the lead, take the crowd out of it, and make the home side feel the pressure, there’s no reason why they can’t push the Lions all the way and seriously challenge them for the four points.
With that said, taking the underdogs to cover the generous 19.5 point spread looks to be the best play to kick off the round.
