AFL Round 9 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Geelong
Friday 7:20pm AEST, May 12th, MCG
A pair of teams coming off Round 8 wins will begin this weekend’s action, with Richmond set to take on Geelong at the MCG on Friday night. It’s expected to be a great night for footy with only a 10% chance of rain in Melbourne, which should make for a great spectacle to get Round 9 underway.
Richmond finally got themselves back on the winners list last weekend when they defeated the Eagles at the MCG. It was a bit of a tug-of-war early doors, but eventually the Tigers gained momentum and were able to run away with a comfortable win. Still, the Tigers have a lot of work to do to get their season back on track as they currently hold a 2-1-5 record.
Although it’s been a tough season to date for Richmond, there have still been plenty of positives. Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are both putting together great seasons in their new colours, and young forward/ruck Samson Ryan is developing nicely and looks like he’ll be an important piece for them going forward.
Geelong looked to be a tad hungover from their premiership in the first couple of rounds, but have quickly turned things around and are now one of the form teams of the competition. They made relatively light work of the Crows at home last weekend, making it five wins on the spin.
The Cats are surging towards the top of the ladder and are currently sitting in sixth spot and only one win behind second. However, they do have some fresh injury concerns they’ll have to navigate in the short term, headlined by Patrick Dangerfield’s hamstring which will likely see him out until after their Round 13 bye.
The Cats have had the Tigers measure over the past two seasons, defeating them in all three of their meetings. They’re also the far better team so far in 2023 and are the deserving favourites for this Round 9 clash. Despite being without their captain in Dangerfield, I expect the Cats to be too strong and to cover the three-goal handicap.

Jeremy Cameron 3+ Goals – Clearly the best forward in the competition and arguably the best player overall. The Tigers have so many injuries to key backs right now and that makes defending this man even tougher.
Tom Stewart 25+ Disposals – Loves playing against the Tigers and gets a lot of ball against them. 25+ disposals in his last three against them and comes in playing well.
Isaac Smith 20+ Disposals – Has recorded 20+ disposals in each of his last 10 matches and always racks them up in the open spaces at the MCG.
Mitch Duncan 20+ Disposals – Another one who relishes playing against Richmond. He’s had 25+ disposals in each of his last four against them, and we’re just looking for 20 here.
