Tunisia vs Australia
Saturday 9pm AEDT, Al Janoub Stadium
With France virtually guaranteed to finish on top of Group D, there is only one Round of 16 spot up for grabs for either Denmark, Tunisia, or Australia to claim. Needless to say, Saturday night’s fixture between Tunisia and Australia in Qatar is a pivotal one.
Tunisia
Expected to struggle to come away with a single point at this tournament, Tunisia surprised the world with a fantastic performance in their opening game against Denmark.
Although they were unable to find the back of the net in their 0-0 draw against the Danes, the Carthage Eagles generated plenty of chances and even won the shot count 13-11.
Despite their high shot count, Issam Jebali was the only Carthage Eagles player to register a shot on target against Denmark.
Tunisia had scored in five of their last six World Cup matches prior to coming to Qatar, so it’s fair to say it’s their defence that has let them down in the past. Issam Jebali was the only Carthage Eagles player to register a shot on target against Denmark.
Tunisia possible starting lineup:
Dahmen; Bronn, Meriah, Talbi; Drager, Skhiri, Laidouni, Abdi; Khazri, Jebali, Msakni
Autralia
Given the tough task of facing the defending champions in their opening Group D fixture, not many pundits gave Australia any chance of coming away with a point. Those pundits turned out to be correct as the Aussies went onto lose 4-1 on Tuesday morning.
The Socceroos actually led Les Bleus after an early goal from Craig Goodwin courtesy of a fantastic Mathew Leckie assist. As a result, the Adelaide United winger became the seventh Aussie in history to score at a World Cup.
As it turned out, Goodwin’s goal would be Australia’s only shot on target for the match, while the French had seven of their own from 23 attempts.
The result and performance was certainly disappointing for the Socceroos, although at least they managed to find the back of the net, which they now have done in seven of their last nine World Cup fixtures.
Australia possible starting lineup:
Ryan; Atkinson, Souttar, Rowles, Behich; Mooy; Leckie, Irvine, McGree, Goodwin; Duke
Prediction
Tunisia’s clean sheet against Denmark was their first in their last 13 World Cup fixtures. Meanwhile, Australia has only ever kept one clean sheet in 17 World Cup fixtures, and that came way back in 1974 in a 0-0 draw against Chile.
With both nations having a history of conceding goals in almost every World Cup match they’ve played; one must believe we should be in for a entertaining battle that will likely include at least a couple of goals.
All things considered, backing both teams to score looks to be the way to play this one.
