The 2017 Players Championship, or “THE PLAYERS”, has often been considered golfs unofficial “fifth major” due to its prestige. The tournament started back in 1974, however its popularity increased when TPC Sawgrass became the host course in 1982. The stadium course is home of the iconic par-3 Island Green, which is why its popular viewing for the fans, but the real reason the players love this tournament is the fat-purse ($10,500,000 prize pool). The winner's share is 18% of that ($1.89 million). The winner will also pickup 80 world rankings points, a five-year PGA Tour exemption, three years’ invitation to all the majors and 600 FedEx Cup points.
It’s been over a month since we have seen a field of this quality on the PGA Tour. The world’s top players are back, including current Masters champion Sergio Garcia, defending champion Jason Day and of course, the world’s best golfer, Dustin Johnson. Last week at the Wells Fargo championship Dustin Johnson almost won his fourth straight tournament. If it wasn’t for some 18th hole heroics from Brian Harman then DJ could be chasing golf history.
2017 Players Championship Betting Tips
We should also mention Rory McIlroy and his new $100 million equipment deal with Taylormade. He has been on tour for 10 years now and he said, “it’s very rare that you get excited about your equipment, but I really feel this new equipment is going to take me to the next leve.”. A slightly confusing statement. Although don’t be confused when you see him in his Nike apparel. He also signed a $200 million apparel deal with Nike.
It's no doubt going to be an interesting weekend of golf, so make sure to read on as I preview and highlight my favourite chances in my 2017 Players Championship betting tips.
Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson’s recent results have a closer resemblance to binary than that of golf results. He has six top 10’s in only eight events played including three wins, a second and a third. Not only is he the longest player on tour he is now ranked 1st in greens in regulation at 75.21%. Even his putting is now up to par (ranked 23rd in strokes gained: putting). The only weakness I can see in his game is his bunker play, currently ranked 199th in sand saves. He's playing unprecedented golf at the moment and can't be ignored.

Justin Thomas
Another player who is trending in the right direction is one of the “millennials” in Justin Thomas. He finished 24th here in 2015 and 3rd last year. He is also having a very productive 2017 on the PGA Tour as he's currently ranked 2nd in FedEx Cup rankings with three wins in 2017….so far. He makes more birdies and more eagles on tour than anybody else.
