The two most storied boxers in Australian history will go toe to toe once again on Friday night, 11 years after their first meeting. Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine and Danny ‘Green Machine’ Green have an infamous rivalry that has spanned the course of two decades, and the two will put that rivalry to rest when they go at it for the final time at the Adelaide Oval on Friday, the 3rd of February. We preview the big fight below and give some tips as to who we think might walk away with bragging rights.
Mundine vs Green 2 - Preview
It’s safe to say that Mundine, 41, and Green, 43, are well past their physical prime. The two were already on the older side when they met 11 years ago in front of 30,000 people at the Sydney Football Stadium. This won’t take any venom out of their fierce dislike for each other, however. Mundine was declared a unanimous victor in the first fight that at the time was the most watched pay-per-view TV event in Australian history.
Green had to come down in weight considerably to fight Mundine that night, the roles will be reversed for Mundine vs Green II though, with Green being able to fight at his preferred weight, while Mundine, who has never fought at the weight, will have to step up. The fight is set for 83kg’s, which is 13 more than Mundine’s last fight against American Charles Hatley last year.
Green has some impressive wins over his career, with victories in his dominant years over the likes of Roy Jones Jr, BJ Flores and Manny Siaca all via TKO or KO. His last four wins, however, he has failed to knockout his opponent.

Green will still possess power that he didn’t in their first meeting. With the fight set at 83kgs, he will have the opportunity to put on even more weight after the weigh in and experts say he could weigh as much as 90kgs on fight night. It makes for a tough test for Mundine, who relied on his speed and precision in earlier years, but has recently been knocked down by fighters weighing 60-70kgs. Green should only need to connect on one good shot to make Mundine hit the floor. Mundine to be knocked down could be a solid play.
TIP: Anthony Mundine to be knocked down - $1.85 at Sportsbet
Mundine doesn’t think the weight is an issue, however, stating when the fight was announced,
“You know what weight we’re fighting at? We’re fighting at ‘Danny Weight’. But, you know what, it don’t matter, I’m going to school him again”

The bookmakers have opened with Green being a strong favourite for the match, and word is that he will be even shorter come fight night. If Mundine is to have any hope of winning, he will need a repeat of the first fight nearly 11 years ago. That night he was able to withstand the early barrage of power by Green to whittle away at him when the bigger man got tired. One could argue with the extra weight Green will have for this fight that he could lose considerable speed, giving Mundine a small advantage at least.
Mundine vs Green 2 - Prediction
It’s tough to try to pick a winner. The two haven’t fought each other for 11 years and fighting over the past 12 months, especially for Mundine, has been very limited. Because of that, you have to give the slight advantage to Green. However, over their careers, Mundine has proven himself to be the superior skilled fighter and if his body, speed and precision permits, he should make a real go of it.
Green definitely doesn’t want this fight to go the distance, so I think for all the people wanting to play it safe, a bet on Green by KO or TKO combined with a Mundine win by points or decision could be a pretty secure option.
