Adelaide United vs Western Sydney Wanderers (Sunday 4pm AEDT)
The Western Sydney Wanderers pulled a rabbit out of the hat last week as it looked as if they would be eliminated in humiliating style when they allowed the Brisbane Roar to race to a 3-0 lead inside the opening 30-minutes. What happened next is arguably the best comeback in A-league history and certainly one of the best spectacles the game has produced since its inauguration. The Wanderers levelled the scores before falling behind again and managing to produce another equaliser before claiming the match in extra time. The victory will give them enormous confidence as they have proved they are never out of a match and have the ability to score goals whilst they would have learned a big lesson that they can’t afford to come out slowly in a finals match otherwise the game can be taken away from them.
Meanwhile Adelaide United had a convincing and comfortable win against Melbourne City. They headed into halftime with the score at 0-0 but they should have been ahead with a few opportunities being narrowly missed whilst they limited City to nearly none. In the second half they came out firing and they eventually won the match 4-1 which is a big win considering that City had improved their defence drastically in the second half of the season whilst they also had the best attack in the league.
The Reds will head into this match as favourites as they have the home field advantage in this one. However, they are still at relatively high odds considering the form the side is in and the dominance they have had against the rest of the competition since the middle part of the season. Adelaide United has lost just one of their last 20 matches and have been on the winning side of 15 of those matches. It is an incredible record, which shows the type of form the side has been in. That dominance also carries over against the Wanderers as they have lost just once in their last 8 meetings and have won four of them.
It will be an entertaining Grand Final with no one predicting these two sides would be facing off in the biggest game of the season. The side’s have overcame the odds to make it here and the Wanderers are likely to play with nothing to lose after producing the miracle last weekend. However, we believe it would be silly to back against Adelaide United in this one as they are in terrific form and have the home field advantage.
