Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Review
Rain greeted the teams on Friday at the Imola Circuit, and it appeared early on that Ferrari were going to continue their dominance. Championship leader Charles Leclerc led his teammate Carlos Sainz in FP1; however Red Bull turned the tables in Qualifying, with Verstappen taking Pole Position for the first Sprint race of the season.
Verstappen cruised to victory in the Sprint, despite Leclerc getting into the lead heading into turn 1. A clear order appeared to be forming, with the Ferrari and Red Bull second drivers finishing 3rd and 4th, and the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finishing 5th and 6th.
The race proper started in damp conditions, with Verstappen getting away well to lead into turn 1. Leclerc on the other hand had a shocking start, falling to 4th behind Sergio Perez and Lando Norris. At turn 2, Ricciardo collided with Sainz, ruining both their races and giving some of the midfield teams a chance to score a decent haul of points.
Leclerc eventually passed Norris on lap 8, however he had already dropped 6 seconds to Verstappen, who was cruising at the front with his teammate acting as rear gunner. The middle part of the race turned into a bit of a procession, with the drivers too concerned to pit for slick tyres and at the same time driving on worn intermediates. Eventually, Ricciardo pitted for slicks which triggered the entire field pitting to get their slick tyres.
The procession continued as the Race Director refused to allow DRS until late in the race. It may not have mattered, as the race petered out with Verstappen dominating at the front. Leclerc made a huge mistake on lap 54 as he tried to chase down Perez, forcing him to pit. Leclerc dropped to 7th, before finishing 6th.
So Red Bull dominated in a weekend where Ferrari had an absolute shocker, meaning both championships are back on.
Miami Grand Prix Preview
Whilst not as fast overall as the Jeddah International circuit, this Miami street circuit does look very quick. Sector 2 does have a multi-corner slow section, but there are two long straights and some fast corners throughout. The long back straight is like the back straight at Jeddah, which leads to a hairpin corner, leading onto the pit straight. I would not be surprised in the slightest to see Verstappen using the same tactic he used at Jeddah, closing down the back straight and then using DRS to pass on the main straight. That’s if he ever gets behind.
Red Bull appeared to make some handy upgrades at Imola, and unless Ferrari bring something to Miami, I see this being a Red Bull race. The odds agree, with Verstappen around the $2.10 mark to win the race, depending on where you shop. As a result, the bets here are going to concentrate on Red Bull having a good weekend and trying to find value in the lower placings.
In qualifying, I lean Leclerc to get the best of his Ferrari over one lap, however the value lies with Perez at $13. Perez took Pole Position at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and at the odds available a small play of Perez is the play.
