EPL 2024-25: Matchday 10 Preview & Betting Tips
Newcastle vs Arsenal
St James’ Park, Saturday 11th November, 11:30pm AEDT
Matchday 10 commences in the north as Arsenal travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle. After a brilliant start to the season where they had three wins and a draw from the opening four games of the season, Newcastle have been on a dramatic slide, failing to win a single game since Matchday 4. The Magpies have lost two straight games after their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on the weekend, and have three losses and two draws from their last five games.
Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool last week sees the Gunners five points adrift of top spot, and only one point ahead of fifth placed Chelsea. Arsenal twice took the lead, but conceded in the 81st minute in what could turn out to be two incredibly costly points missed. The Gunners have only won two of their last five games in the Premier League, with the form of their back four dropping off significantly. Arsenal conceded only one goal through the opening four games of the season, in their last five games they have conceded nine goals.
Fortunately for Mikel Arteta’s side, Newcastle have been one of the least potent sides in the league this season, scoring just nine goals - ranked 17th in the Premier League. Newcastle’s record against Arsenal doesn’t make for pretty reading either, a 3-1-19 in Premier League fixtures against the Gunners since 2012. There’s a lot on the line for two sides who are in form slumps, so expect a lot of desperation on display in this fixture. The Gunners clash will rise to the top in this clash, and they’ll keep themselves in touch with City and Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Brighton
Anfield, Sunday 3rd November, 2:00am AEDT
A top six clash is on the cards at Anfield on Sunday morning, as Liverpool and Brighton face off in a table shaping clash. Mo Salah’s 81st minute goal secured a crucial point for the Reds who did drop to second place on the table, but sit just one point behind Manchester City. Brighton’s two game winning streak came to a frustrating end against 19th placed Wolverhampton, who snatched a remarkable draw. Brighton led 2-0 but conceded goals in the 88th and 93rd minute to throw away what should’ve been a certain victory.
Despite conceding two goals in a game for the first time this season, Arne Slot’s side are still the number one ranked defence in the league, having conceded only five goals. Brighton on the other hand are in the bottom half of the league for goals conceded, which looms as a major vulnerability in this fixture. Liverpool are ranked equal fifth for goals this season (17) and have two of the top ten goal scorers in the league, with Mo Salah (6) and Luis Diaz (5).
Brighton are an excellent attacking team, however with their inconsistent defence they have shown to be a high variance team over the past few seasons. That kind of football does not stack up against a consistent outfit like Liverpool, who have won seven of their nine games this season. Brighton have only won two of their last seven games, and are a sitting duck for a Liverpool side that matches up brilliantly against them.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Monday 4th November, 1:00am AEDT
Aston Villa travel south to London to take on Tottenham, looking to cement their place in the top four. Tottenham’s up and down season continued with a 1-0 defeat against 17th placed Crystal Palace, who had yet to win a game before last week. Spurs dominated possession (67%) but had less shots on goal and shots on target in what was nothing short of a baffling performance from Ange Postecoglou’s side. A 96th minute equaliser cost Villa a victory over Bournemouth on Matchday 9, a win would have had them in third place.
Despite last week’s frustrations, Aston Villa are putting together another excellent season, as Unai Emery’s side continue to show last season’s top four finish was no fluke. Aston Villa have a 5-3-1 record this season, with their only loss coming on Matchday 2 against Arsenal, and are currently on a seven-game unbeaten run. They aren’t elite in any phase of the game, but are an incredibly well-rounded side that have one of the best managers in Europe.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium won’t be an intimidating prospect for Aston Villa, who are yet to lose away from home this season. Villa have enjoyed playing Spurs in recent seasons, having won three of the last four Premier League fixtures between the two sides. Tottenham have been incredibly inconsistent this season, so for a top four side to be paying as much as Villa are in this clash, makes it the best value pick of the weekend.
