The TAB has introduced a new bet type called a Trio. Similar to a Quinella where punters are trying to predict the first two across the line in any order, a Trio takes it one step further; punters can select three or more runners in one bet and if they finish first, second or third in any order, the bet is successful.
A Trio bet is not the same as a Boxed Trifecta. If you select three runners for a Trio bet, it is a single bet. If you were to box three runners into a Trifecta, you would have six individual bets. To make it easier to understand, here is a basic example. You select horses numbered 1, 2 and 3 in a boxed trifecta. The six possible combinations are:
- 1, 2, 3 (1 to finish 1st, 2 to finish 2nd and 3 to finish 3rd)
- 1, 3, 2
- 2, 1, 3
- 2, 3, 1
- 3, 1, 2
- 3, 2, 1
Your bet cost is $6 for 100% of the dividend if successful. With a Trio bet, however, because it is a single bet, $1 will give you 100%, also known as a full unit. Therefore, any Trio bets will only cost one-sixth of a full unit of a Boxed Trifecta. It is important to note that Trio and Trifecta bets will not have the same dividend with factors such as runners’ odds, percentage of bets on the winning combination from both bet types and pool size affecting the dividends.

The Trio bet type will be available on all local thoroughbred, greyhound and harness races for S-TAB and NSW TAB customers only.
TAB’s Merged Pool Technology is an enhancement to the tote betting system. It allows bet types on a single race to be merged into one pool. What this means is that Trio bets will be merged with the Trifecta pool. This generates more liquidity, which means greater dividend stability and punter confidence.
