2017 Davis Cup Semi Finals Preview & Betting Tips

September 12th 2017, 1:49pm, By: andyrosos

The end of the US Open earlier this week marks the end of the Grand Slam season of tennis, however, it also signals the recommencement of the 2017 Davis Cup. We take a look at the two semi-final matchups to be played this weekend (September 15th-17th) and give our betting tips for both below.

Belgium vs Australia (Brussels, Belgium)

After a gutsy win over the United States in the quarters, the boys in green and gold have progressed to the semi-finals and due to the seeding will have to travel to Brussels to take on Belgium over the weekend. Aussie Captain Lleyton Hewitt has stated that bad boy Bernard Tomic is ‘a long way off’ making a return to the Davis Cup team and instead will turn to Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson to carry the singles load while the doubles will see John Peers and the returning Thanasi Kokkinakis in action.

Belgium were able to defeat Italy and reach the semi-final much on the back of some stellar play by World No.13 David Goffin. Goffin won both of his singles matchups, allowing Steve Darcis to capture the decisive win. Aussie young gun Nick Kyrgios seems to have new life for the Davis Cup and if he is at his best he should give Goffin a real run. The Australian doubles combination of Peers and Kokkinakis should also have the wood over a Belgian duo of Ruben Bemelmans and Joris De Loore, ranked 96th and 199th respectively.

If the Aussies can win the doubles matchup and both Thompson and Kyrgios defeat Darcis at the very least, they won’t have to rely on Kyrgios to defeat Goffin, which could likely still happen. We think the Aussies have more avenues to victory here and like them as $2 underdogs.

TIP: Australia to win - $2 at CrownBet

France vs Serbia (Lille, France)

France, the highest remaining seed in the tournament will host Serbia in the second semi-final in what promises to be a bit of a mismatch. The Serbs will be without star Novak Djokovic for the matchup, after the World No.6 has stated he will take the rest of the season off to recover from an elbow injury.

The French side will also be missing a star in Gael Monfils for the matchup. However, their depth is much more prominent than that of the Serbs, and will still have Jo Wilfred Tsonga, Lucas Pouille, Nicholas Mahut and Pierre-Hughes Herbet to fall back on, all of whom have been ranked inside the top sixty.

Not much value in this one at all with the Frenchman paying $1.02 to take out the tie. When they get through this matchup and are met with the option to bring back the likes of Monfils, Benot Paire, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon back into the fold, they should be extremely hard to beat in the final too.

TIP: France to win 2017 Davis Cup - $1.80 at Sportsbet
