2023 AFL Brownlow Round 3 Overview

The young guns are continuing to shine in season 2023 which is exciting to see, but a few familar names will also appear in the Brownlow votes for Round 3 action. Nick Daicos, Izak Rankine and Caleb Serong showed they are stars on the rise, while reigning Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps put in a career best game to make sure his name is read out nice and early on Brownlow night. Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Marcus Bontempelli are also likely to feature this round!

2023 AFL Brownlow Votes - Round 3 Match Analysis

Western Bulldogs 10.7.67 def Brisbane 7.11.53

The Dogs are on the board for 2023 with a tough win over the Lions to kick off Round 3. Marcus Bontempelli set the tone early and ended with 28 disposals, 6 tackles and 7 clearances in a ripping performance. Tom Liberatore (29 disposals, 6 marks, 9 tackles), Jack Macrae (30 disposals) and Adam Treloar (28 disposals, 9 clearances) all worked into the game, while Jamarra Ugle-Hagan overcame a tough week to hit the scoreboard with 5 goals from his 9 disposals. Lachie Neale (31 disposals, 8 clearances, 1 goal) was busy, Josh Dunkley (24 disposals, 9 marks, 6 tackles) was good against his old side, while Harris Andrews was a huge presence down back with 21 disposals and 16 marks. Tricky game for votes which could go a number of ways.

Collingwood 8.15.63 def Richmond 7.7.49

It was a slippery night which produced a tough contest but the Pies always had the edge all night to go to a 3-0 start to the season. Jordan De Goey was excellent with 35 disposals and 10 clearances to be best on ground. Nick Daicos (33 disposals) and Tom Mitchell (30 disposals) also won plenty of ball, while Steele Sidebottom was clean with the ball early with 24 disposals. Liam Baker was tireless for the Tigers with 33 disposals to be their best, while Toby Nankervis won the ruck battle with 40 hitouts, 20 disposals, 7 tackles and 7 clearances.

Hawthorn 11.14.80 def North Melbourne 9.7.61

The Hawks are on the board for season 2023 as they held off the Kangaroos. The Hawks controlled the ball with uncontested possession which inflated their numbers. Will Day was superb with 29 disposals and 11 marks, while James Sicily (28 disposals, 18 marks), Blake Hardwick (23 disposals, 11 marks) and Dylan Moore (26 disposals, 12 marks, 2 goals) also won plenty of footy. Harry Sheezel was again one of the best for North with 26 disposals and 6 tackles, while Cam Zurhaar (20 disposals, 2 goals) also played well.

GWS Giants 9.10.64 def by Carlton 9.20.74

An inaccurate Carlton did enough to get the points against the Giants with Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps leading the way with a career-best 42 disposals and 13 clearances. Sam Docherty (39 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) also won plenty of ball, while Nic Newman did a sensational job by keeping Toby Greene to just five touches while picking up 24 disposals and 11 marks himself. Tom Green (34 disposals, 7 clearances) and Josh Kelly (30 disposals, 9 tackles, 1 goal) were busy for the Giants.

St.Kilda 14.8.92 def Essendon 11.8.74

The Saints are undefeated and on top of the ladder after Round 3! Who picked that? Mason Wood has been the surprise packet of the season as he had another excellent game with 27 disposals, 11 marks and a goal. Brad Crouch (32 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances) was typically prolific, Callum Wilkie (19 disposals, 13 marks) was a rock in defence, while Jack Higgins (18 disposals, 4 goals) and Dan Butler (13 disposals, 4 goals) were busy up forward. Nic Martin (28 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal) and Darcy Parish (35 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal) were best for the Bombers.

Port Adelaide 13.8.86 def by Adelaide 18.9.117

The Crows upset the Power in the Showdown, booting the last six goals of the game. Izak Rankine (17 disposals, 4 goals) and Riley Thilthorpe (11 disposals, 5 goals) were damaging up forward, Rory Laird (26 disposals, 10 clearances, 1 goal) was great in the middle, while Jordan Dawson was a controversial winner of the Showdown Medal with 18 disposals and 1 goal. We normally have a rule to never go against a game’s medal winner, but this one will be an exception to that rule. Connor Rozee was best for the Power with 28 disposals, 6 clearances and a goal.

Gold Coast 10.13.73 def Geelong 7.12.54

The Suns rocked the Cats to leave the Premiers on the bottom of the ladder as the only team yet to land a victory this season! Jack Lukosius finally delivered on his promise with a great game that included 5 goals from 13 disposals and 9 marks. Jarrod Witts (35 hitouts, 13 disposals), Matt Rowell (24 disposals, 9 clearances), Lachie Weller (29 disposals, 7 marks) and Darcy McPherson (24 disposals, 9 marks) were among their best. Tom Stewart returned from injury in style with 29 disposals and 13 marks on a low day for the Cats.

Melbourne 21.8.134 def Sydney 12.12.84

The Dees were too strong in a heavyweight battle at the G with the familiar names of Christian Petracca (33 disposals, 6 clearances) and Clayton Oliver (25 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 goals) again likely to fight it out for the Brownlow votes. Brodie Grundy stepped into the #1 ruck role with 21 disposals and 25 hitouts in a solid game. Callum Mills picked up 25 disposals for the Swans.

Fremantle 16.12.108 def West Coast 9.13.67

The Dockers got their season rolling with a strong win against an injury-ravaged Eagles in the Derby. Caleb Serong was outstanding with 35 disposals, 8 tackles and 8 clearances to win the medal for best on ground. James Aish (31 disposals, 7 tackles), Sam Switkowski (21 disposals, 2 goals) and Sean Darcy (20 disposals, 52 hitouts, 1 goal) will fight it out for the minor Brownlow votes. Tim Kelly tried hard for the Eagles to pick up 33 disposals.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
