2024 AFL Round 23 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs Adelaide
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, August 17th, Adelaide Oval
Port Adelaide were well and truly tested by the undermanned Demons last weekend but managed to find a way to dig deep and pull out an important two-point win at the MCG (53-51). That result came one week after the Power shocked the footy world with a whopping 112-point win against the ladder-leading Swans.
The Power have now strung four wins together as well as six wins from their past seven in what first looked like a tough run home in terms of opponents faced. Importantly, the Power this season have won on all four occasions in matches decided by less than a kick, which is a big reason why they currently occupy second spot on the ladder.
In lineup news, Todd Marshall will miss after entering concussion protocols, while Mitch Georgiades, who was in some sizzling form, will also sit out for the second straight game with a quad issue. Ryan Burton will return to the seniors after a lengthy layoff.
Elsewhere, Adelaide are coming off one of their best wins in what has been a thoroughly disappointing 2024 campaign. They destroyed the in-form Bulldogs by 39 points at Adelaide Oval last weekend (111-72), which came after they pushed the Cats at the Cattery all the way the week prior.
Still, the Crows sit way down in 15th spot on the ladder which is certainly where they didn’t expect to be coming into the year. However, they have a chance to at least give their supporters some joy this Saturday with a win over a club they passionately dislike.
In team selection news, the Crows have made just the one change with Lachie Gollant coming in for veteran forward Tex Walker.
Match Prediction: The Power, due to far superior form over the course of the season, deservedly start Showdown LVI as the clear favourites. However, as we all know, ladder position means nothing in such rivalry games and that was evident again earlier this season when the Crows defeated the Power by a comfortable 30 points (78-48), which made it three straight wins against their rival.
With that said, both clubs have been playing some great footy over the last couple of weeks in particular, and I’m expecting a tight contest on Saturday night as a result. Given their recent success in the Showdown coupled with this being marked as their Grand Final for 2024, I’m keen to take the Crows to cover the spread.

Charlie Dixon 2+ Goals – After some poor form through the middle portion of the season, Dixon looks to be back in form with some good performances in recent weeks.
Riley Thilthorpe 2+ Goals – Has looked an absolute beast since returning from a lengthy injury layoff where he clearly lived in the gym. He’s a man on the rise.
Esava Ratugolea 1+ Goals – Will be needed up forward again with no Marshall or Georgiades available. He can hit the scoreboard here.
