PGA TOUR
The Honda Classic
Where: Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA
When: Thursday 27th February, 10:45PM AEST
The golf season is well and truly underway, approximately a third of the way into the season. However for the world’s best golfers such as Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Rory Mcilroy their season will begin this week at the Honda classic in Florida.
The PGA National resort and spa champions’ course was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 2002 and is notoriously tough. With water on almost every hole and the world famous “Bear Trap” which is the name given to holes 15 through 17 and known as one of the toughest stretches in golf.
This course really rewards accuracy. So for players that are perhaps struggling off the tee it would be wise to leave them off your card.
The Favourites: There is a reason the bookies are giving us such juicy odds on Tiger, Rory and Scott (All 10-1 or better) and that’s because they are coming into this tournament with very little “Tournament Preparation”. This is not to say they haven’t been working hard on their game but the fierce competitiveness of the PGA tour is a far cry from hitting balls in the backyard of your exuberant Florida mansion.
Here are my best picks for the Honda Classic.
BET ON:
Charl Schwartzel - 22-1
One of the better value in-form shorter priced favourites.
Will Mackenzie - 61-1
Rather unknown player but very accurate off the tee. Has had a solid 2014 with two top 10s and $774,000 in earnings.
Chris Kirk – 71-1
This guy is right on the verge of breaking through. Ranked 5th in fed ex cup standings and 1.8 million in earnings already. Good record at this course.
Thorbjorn Oleson -81-1
This Danish golfer is another unknown. Has a win on the European tour in 2014. Value pick
