Horse Racing Tips: Thursday, September 10th
Mornington Race 1 (Market)
This is a very low 2000m race to start the day at Mornington but I’m having something on (8) Warrior Woman for Phillip Stokes and Luke Nolen. She’s had two starts this prep, over 1400m and 1600m, and now steps up to 2000m for the first time third up from a spell. She gets the blinkers on for the first time so hopefully that can sharpen her up, because this is a very winnable race. Stokes has a great record on the Pakenham track and Nolen is one of his main riders, so the set up looks good.
Hawkesbury Race 4 (Market)
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott brings two runners to Hawkesbury today and (9) Only Mine looks to be quite clearly the best of their chances. Whenever this stable bring runners here, they normally win with at least one of them. They operated at a 52% strike rate here last season, with 16 winners from 31 runners. This filly failed in two starts in her debut campaign but she returns from a good break today and has been trialling well leading into her first up run. She led in her latest trial, so expect her to come across from barrier 12 and lead. From there, she will be very hard to run down. (4) Invincible Ninja is the obvious danger. She’s also been trialling well and Mark Newnham is another trainer with a good record here. She will have the sit on Only Mine, it’s just whether she can get past her.
Ipswich Race 4 (Market)
Tony Sears brings one runner to Ipswich today in the form of (1) Raging Pole, who was beaten 2.45L first up at Doomben in a BM78. Back to an easier grade today in a Class 5 at Ipswich today and this looks a very winnable race. He goes well second up with a win and two placings from three starts, including a 0.1L defeat last prep. Speaking of trainers with good strike rates, Tony Sears has a 41% strike rate here at Ipswich. Expecting him to win.
Ipswich Race 7 (Market)
(3) Miss Too Fly resumes from a spell today and should find this easier than what she was racing against last preparation. She did all her racing in the city last campaign, before failing last time we saw her at the Sunshine Coast. She’s trialled at Doomben leading into this, should appreciate dropping back to this BM60 for fillies and mares, and this is one of just two runners on the day for Tony Gollan. Looks hard to beat fresh.
Ballina Race 6 (Market)
Pretty simple way to play this race. I’ll be backing (3) Entitlement and saving on (1) Dorset Coast. Entitlement finished 5th as favourite first up at Gatton, having won two trials leading into his resumption. He normally improves significantly with that run under the belt though, so I wouldn’t jump off him just yet. He’s undefeated from two starts when second up from a spell. He’ll put himself right up there on speed from barrier 2, he gets Matthew McGuren on board and trainer Michael Costa had four winners from seven starters here at Ballina last season. Expect him to improve and be hard to beat. Dorset Coast is from the Matt Dunn yard. He’s improved with each run this prep, and third up is really when he peaks. He’s undefeated third up and that’s when both career wins have come. He looks the obvious danger.
Saver: (1) Dorset Coast $3.90
