This is a look at the women’s side of things.
2015 Australian Open Preview – Womens
Unlike the Men’s, it really looks like there are six or seven players who could realistically win the Women’s title at the 2015 Australian Open. In saying that, the two top-ranked players in Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are still the ones to beat.
Of these two it seems like Sharapova is in better form at the moment, while Williams looked a little sluggish at the Hopman Cup. This is a Grand Slam, however, and Williams is always the one to beat.
The contenders outside of these two look like former No. 1 ranked players Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki, while Petra Kvitova is also looking dangerous. There are also threats like 20-year Eugenie Bouchard who looks like a legitimate star in the making.
The interesting one here is Simona Halep. She’s ranked no. 3 in the world, but has still yet to breakthrough with a Grand Slam victory. Halep looked so dangerous is the final against Sharapova at last year’s French Open and will be very tough to beat if she can pull out that kind of tennis to start off 2015. Her draw also looks favourable.
It really is a very tough year to pick the winner and it wouldn’t be too surprising if a new name, like Halep, won their first slam. 19-year old Madison Keys also comes to mind as one who could be a threat to the more experienced players.
With this kind of field the Women at the Australian Open could steal the spotlight off the men. We can’t wait to see how it plays out.
Predicted winner: Simona Halep
Outright betting verdict: We will be steering clear of Serena Williams at $4 and below and instead be making a play on Simona Halep at around $8. Sharapova at $5 is the main threat. Taking Eugenie Bouchard’s draw into account we also see some value with her at $13.
Bet On: Simona Halep outright winner - $8 at Sportsbet
