It's hard to watch TV, listen to the radio or walk down the street without hearing something about Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) in Australia. There is no doubt DFS has taken the country by storm and at the forefront of that is Draftstars.
Considering they host daily fantasy tournaments with the biggest prize pools, it might be surprising to know that Draftstars is one the newest DFS sites in Australia.
Draftstars launched in March of this year and since then has been hosting MASSIVE daily fantasy contests for sports ranging from AFL, NRL and NBA. Of those sporting codes, AFL is easily the most popular.
While some daily fantasy sites host AFL tournaments with prize pools struggling to make four-figures, DraftStars hosts multiple five-figure prize pool AFL contests every weekend - including their new flagship $50,000 AFL Weekend Shootout!
The $50,000 AFL daily fantasy tournament on Draftstars costs just $15 to enter and the winner goes home with a staggering $10,000 every single weekend! It's amazing to think that Draftstars is holding a weekly DFS event with the same prize pool as the entire year-long Herald Sun SuperCoach competition.
For those not familiar with how Daily Fantasy Sports works it is quite simply a daily (or weekly) version of the season-long fantasy games you already play like SuperCoach or DreamTeam.
Each participant is given a virtual salary cap to choose their best team from a selection of either one or more games depending on which DFS tournament you are playing. Each player in teams are given a pretend salary based on their performance, ability and average fantasy scoring prowess. The fun part about DFS is that you can't fit all the players you want into your salary cap, which is where a little bit of knowledge and skill comes in!
Using the $50,000 Weekend Shootout as an example, each participant is given $100,000 to choose players from the final six AFL games starting from the Saturday afternoon game and lasting until the final game on Sunday. Your players for the weekend will then score fantasy points based on stats such as kicks, handballs, marks, tackles and more!
If your selected team scores the most points out of every participant in the tournament, you will win the $10,000! Another great thing is that the payouts work like a poker tournament, meaning the top 15-20% of players will at least win some cash for their efforts!
Usually in the $50K event it is the top 500 or so players that take home at least $20 (meaning a $5 profit), while most of the big money is found finishing in the top 25. Here is how a look at the pointy end of the payouts for this weekend.

The $50K AFL tournament isn't the only DFS contest taking place at Draftstars this weekend. There are also dozens of other AFL tournaments ranging in buy-in from $1 to $15. There is also the $5K Kangaroos vs Richmond and $10K Saturday & Sunday events which will be very popular.
For those who don't want to commit to staying under the salary cap and doing some of the research that goes with that, never fear, Draftstars also offer unique Turbo DFS tournaments.
These fast-paced daily fantasy contests see each participant choosing five or more players with each 'slot' featuring up to 7 guns to choose from. There are no salaries to worry about, you just choose which player you think will score the most points in each slot!
Good luck with your daily fantasy teams!
