Weather
Melbourne - Cloudy, 33 degrees
Sydney - Mostly cloudy, 29 degrees
Warm but comfortable conditions in Melborune, Geelong and Sydney tomorrow, so should be no issues for players.
Where to Attack?
The Bulldogs are the biggest favourites of the day and come up against the Roos who leaked plenty of points last season, particular to opposition forwards. Bulldogs stacks are always popular, however the baby joeys are starting to grow up and the Dogs have several key injuries, so it will be interesting to see how that match plays out. The Roos defenders should see plenty of ball.
Also expect to see Fremantle try to control the ball out of defence, and it should be down there often enough with the Cats warm favourites.
Plenty of opportunity to run double or triple (or even more) ruck stacks with several dual-position players named in the ruck on this slate.
Game script: Bulldogs forwards, Fremantle/North Melbourne defenders
VALUE PLAYS
Sam Davidson ($7,250) will debut for the Bulldogs on a wing after an impressive performance in the AAMI Community Series where he collected 29 disposals (23 in the first half). A mature-age recruit, Davidson looks ready to go on the big stage and gets a soft match up here against the Roos. Looks like the chalk of the slate.
Liam Reidy ($7,800) has been named for Freo and anytime a #1 ruck is listed at a budget price, it’s worth consideration. Reidy will also line up against Sam De Koning who can only be considered a makeshift ruckman at this point. Reidy didn’t do much in his two games late last season with a 51.5 average, however he should get first hands on the ball enough to have a decent floor, especially at the tight GMHBA Stadium, and hopefully he can collect a few touches around the ground to hit value.
Finn O’Sullivan ($8,000) will play his first game for the Roos after being drafted #2 in the most recent draft. The Roos seem quietly confident in the ability of FOS to hit the ground running, and he’ll literally be doing just that out on a wing where he should get free for plenty of link up action.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Patrick Lipinski ($9,580) was disappointing last week with a score of only 53, but he wasn't the only Magpie to have a bad day. If we wind back to the AAMI Community Series and Lipinski had 37 disposals and 141 fantasy points against Richmond. Sure, that was when life was a bit easier, but if most DFS coaches are turned off from his score last week, then it might be a good time to stick with him to rebound back at low ownership.
Ryan Burton ($10,170) might be the one to fill the big hole left in the defence at Port after the departure of Dan Houston. It is a bit of a risk given that Burton only averaged 65.6 last season without a single ton, however Burton is a good distributor so the Houston boost might go towards him and/or Kane Farell ($11,960).
Sam Darcy ($11,540) is the man the Roos have to stop if they are to cause an upset on Saturday night. Darcy destroyed them last time with 20 disposals, 9 marks, 7 goals and 133 fantasy points in Round 23. The Roos struggle in their backline to handle height so it’s hard to see who is going to stop Darcy who is tracking to have an enormous season (and career) ahead.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Ed Richards ($14,150) does come into this match under a slight pre-season injury concern but if he’s declared fit, you’d assume he’s right to go. Richards had some brilliant moments last season after being thrust into the midfield, including a season high of 141. With no Bont or Treloar, Richards is going to be the main man in the Dogs midfield to start the season, so those in-and-under handballs from Libba are going to land in Richards’ lap. Expect him to go large against the joeys at a good price.
Harry Sheezel ($16,440) is the standout premium player on the slate at the price for mine. With a 112.1 average and a high of 159 last season, Sheezel will roam wherever he likes and should rack up possession at will across the midfield pushing forward. Will he get a hard tag is the only question? Superstar of the competition at just 20 years of age, this is probably as cheap as you’ll get him all season.
