After a well-documented poor start to the year, Adelaide finally found themselves on the winners list in Round 5. They looked on their way to their fifth loss in as many games when they trailed late against the Blues, but were able to dig deep and come away two-point winners on the back of a couple of special individual performances.
Star forward turned midfielder in Round 5, Izak Rankine was clearly best afield with his 23 disposals and three goals. Rankine had only been at 21 centre bounces in the four previous rounds but attended 20 against the Blues in a match-winning move. Sam Berry was also a big difference maker as the activated sub, collecting nine disposals and kicking the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter.
In important lineup news for the Crows, Matt Crouch will miss after picking up a one-game suspension for his bump on Jack Carroll. Lachie Sholl will come into the side for his third game of the season.
Likewise, Essendon were under some pressure heading into Round 5 and were also able to deliver with a resounding win. They won all four quarters against the Bulldogs to eventually finish up 29-point winners at Marvel Stadium.
It was a necessary bounce back performance for the Bombers after their horrible showing against the Power in Gather Round. And for all the talk around the Brad Scott coached side in 2024, they enter Friday night’s clash with a positive 3-2 record.
Match prediction: With both of these clubs coming off impressive wins last weekend, you can expect a high-quality affair at Adelaide Oval on Friday night. The Crows will start as the clear favourites despite their inferior win/loss record in 2024. Interestingly, the Bombers have won the last six meetings between these teams, although they haven’t met in Adelaide since 2020.
After finally getting the monkey off their back in Round 5, there’s a sense of optimism surrounding the Crows ahead of this clash, while also knowing in the back of their mind that they have North Melbourne coming up next weekend. A win in this one will breathe life back into their season and with the home crowd behind them, coupled with the Bombers poor performances on the road this season, I like the Crows to secure a win in a competitive game.
