AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
Essendon vs Port Adelaide
Saturday 7:25pm AEST, July 1st, MCG
Headlining the four-game slate of AFL action this Saturday is the Essendon vs Port Adelaide clash at the MCG. Kick off at the home of footy is set for the usual night time slot of 7:25pm (AEST), with a big crowd expected to be at the ground.
Essendon will be hoping to put on a better performance for their fans than they did last weekend when they were thoroughly outplayed by Fremantle. Their 32 point loss in the West put an end to a four-game win streak that had their supporters up and about.
The Bombers have shown great improvement under the tutelage of Brad Scott this season. They already have eight wins to their name which is one better than they amassed for the entire 2022 season, and they still have nine matches to play this campaign.
Likewise, Port Adelaide have improved leaps and bounds on what was an overall poor 2022 season. They managed only 10 wins from their 22 matches last campaign, but have already chalked up 12 wins from only 14 matches.
The Power are currently on a massive 11-game win streak which is now easily the best in club history. They had the bye last weekend but prior to that they made very light work of the reigning premiers, smashing them by 38 points despite being more than three goals down at quarter time.
All facets of the game are humming for Ken Hinkley’s men right now, but arguably the most impressive aspect of their recent performances has been their explosive scoring power. They’ve put up scores of 151, 107, and 110 in their last three matches, and two of them were against fellow top eight sides.
Considering just how dominant the Power have been over the past three months, it’s surprising they’re only two-goal favourites for this clash with the Bombers, regardless of where the match is being played.
The Power are clearly the form team of the competition and until they show signs of dropping off, I’m more than happy to continue backing them in.

Port Adelaide to Win – Won 11 matches in a row and a lot of them have been against better opposition than the Bombers. They should be getting the job done here.
Peter Wright 2+ Goals – Has a big height advantage over all of the Power’s defenders. Is the most likely to hit the scoreboard for the home side.
Connor Rozee 25+ Disposals – Should flourish in the open spaces at the MCG with his pace. Having another AA worthy season and should be getting plenty of the ball in this one.
