The PGA Tour moves into the lone star state of Texas for the 2017 WGC Dell Technology Match Play. Once again Jason Day is the defending champion but the tournament favourites will be Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy.
2017 PGA Tour WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Betting Tips
Where: Austin Country Club – Austin, Texas
When: Thursday 23rd March (1:24am AEST first tee)
This week is the PGA Tours version of March Madness. In fact, you can now take part in Dell Technologies Bracket Challenge over at fantasybracket.pgatour.com. This is only the third year in which the new format has been played. It consists of 64 players and each player is guaranteed three matches in a round robin format, before the elimination rounds begin. At the end of the three matches the player in each group with the most points will advance to single elimination match play with the ‘round of 16’.
Austin Country Club is a par 71 course playing at approximately 7,073 yards. It’s a real risk-reward course that can favour the longer hitters. However, we all know that the putter is the great equalizer, especially in the match play format. I’ve picked three golfers with plenty of course experience and/or match-play success.
Jordan Spieth
Is a perfect selection for this course and format. Spieth is a former Texas Longhorn who regularly competed at Austin Country Club. He won two junior match play championships and the only other player to achieve this was Tiger Woods. Spieth has the softest draw in the first three rounds and he should be able to build momentum from there.
Tip: Jordan Spieth to win - $ 10 at CrownBet
Paul Casey
Unfortunately, my second favourite golfer this week is on the same side draw as my first pick. However, his odds are big enough to justify a small saver bet on him. Casey has finished runner up twice in this event and seems to really thrive in the match play format. He drove the ball well in Mexico hitting 71.43% of fairways.
Tip: Paul Casey to win - $34 at CrownBet
J B Holmes
Is my best long shot pick of the week. JB Holmes is very long off the tee and could take advantage of that at Austin Country Club. Holmes has also tasted success in Texas before, winning the 2015 Shell Houston Open. He has a winnable bracket and looks slightly over the odds.
