Champions League Matchday 2 Betting Tips

PSG vs Manchester City

Wednesday 29th September, 5.00am (AEST)

One would think PSG were in a horrible form slump with how the media have been reacting to their recent performances, however, they’re a perfect eight wins from eight matches in Ligue 1 and secured an away point in their only Champions League match to date. Lionel Messi has made far from a dream start to his time in Paris, scoreless through three appearances and controversially subbed off in his latest outing.

Manchester City played their part in a highly entertaining match against RP Leipzig in Matchday 1 of the Champions League, which they were able to win 6-3. They’re also coming off an impressive 1-0 win away from home in the Premier League against Chelsea where they kept the Blues to just five shots and zero on target.

PSG are dominating Ligue 1 which is to be expected, but their only Champions League match to date was underwhelming to say the least. Here, they come up against arguably the best team on the planet and a level of talent they simply don’t come up against in their domestic competition. We expect City to be too strong and to get the job done on the road.

Manchester United vs Villareal

Thursday 30th September, 5.00am (AEST)

Manchester United copped a shock 2-1 defeat against Young Boys in their first Champions League match despite leading at half time. The Red Devils were able to bounce back with a clutch win against West Ham in the Premier League, but a devastating 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on the weekend has made it three losses from their last four matches in all competitions.

Villareal played out a 2-2 draw at home against a quality outfit in Atalanta in their first Champions League match. Draws have become a common theme for them so far this season, in fact, seven of their eight matches in major competitions this season have finished all square.

Villareal have been good without being great in La Liga this campaign but will have to rise their level by some margin if they’re to take it up to Manchester United on the road. We expect the Red Devils to secure their first three points of the Champions League with a 2+ goal win on Thursday morning.

Juventus vs Chelsea

Juventus are going through somewhat of a transitional phase with their squad and that’s resulted in some pretty poor performances to date this campaign. They’re 2-2-2 from six outings in the Serie A and have been really poor defensively, unable to secure a single clean sheet so far. Their only Champions League match to date was a positive one however, defeating Malmo 3-0 on the road.

Chelsea were flying along in the Premier League until the weekend just gone where they were thoroughly outplayed by Manchester City in a 1-0 defeat. The Blues failed to fire a single shot on target for the full 90 minutes in what was their first loss of the season in all competitions. Their lone outing in the Champions ended in a 1-0 win at home against Zenit.

Chelsea have certainly been the better of the two teams this season and deserve to be the favourites despite being the visiting team here. However, taking on the Both Teams to Score market looks to be the best way to play this match. Juventus are conceding goals for fun at the moment but are still more than capable of banging in one or two of their own, so getting close to $2 for BTTS looks like solid value.
